darwin suite
queen suite in the 1880 gold rush wing
Charles Darwin arrived in Bathurst on 20 January 1836 and stayed two nights in the barracks where Lieutenant Evernden had lived before marrying Mary-Jane Hawkins.
The young Mr Darwin rode around the Bathurst district and noted a number of “very comfortable houses owned by gentlemen”. This would likely have included Littlebourne as Darwin rode by the homestead on his way to The Grange near O’Connell.
What to expect
Echoes of time and mysteries unfolded abound in the Darwin Suite.
It was originally built in the 1830s as the overseers cottage and had the same floor boards and shingle roof as rooms in the main original house. In the 1880s the cottage was incorporated into the new Gold Rush Wing.
